Power Up 2010 – thank you

Posted: February 28, 2010 by chaplind in Uncategorized

Hello everyone, your GS president Jon Martin here.

I just wanted to send everyone a personal thank you for helping out and/or attending Powerup yesterday.  You guys are what made it such a huge success.  I’d like to especially thank all our staff and the E-Board of Gaming Society, without your support this literally would not have been possible.  Also, I’d like to congratulate all of our tournament winners and hope that we’ll see you again soon at our other events.

If you would like to see the same kind of event happen in the future, please email me personally about any suggestions or comments you may have at jmartin3@umassd.edu so we can make the next one even better!

I’d also like to apologize for any mishaps in the tournament schedule that you may have experienced, I take full responsibility and will work hard to make sure that doesn’t happen again.

Lastly, Gaming Society is looking for new officers to replace all of us for next semester.  If you are interested in possibly taking a more active role in Gaming Society next semester PLEASE do not hesitate to contact us somehow.  We have to fill the positions of President, Vice President, Treasurer, and Secretary, with an optional 5th position of Media Marketing Manager available as well.  If these positions are not filled, Gaming Society will cease to be a recognized organization on campus and will receive no funding and not be able to book rooms.  I can say that being President of this club has been one of the most rewarding and challenging experiences I have ever had.  I have learned so much in my time as President of this club, and the things that I have learned will help me immensely when I move on to bigger things than Gaming Society.  So if you have any inclination or just want to know more about what we actually do, please contact us at umdgamingsociety@gmail.com, or me personally at jmartin3@umassd.edu, or talk to us in person at any one of our meetings.

I’d also like to thank my girlfriend for her love and support.  I love you Melanie!

We at the Powerup Programming Board have finalized the official tournament and event schedule for Powerup!***  We will be releasing the schedules for the different areas of Powerup throughout the week leading up to the event.  First up is the consoles. (Or the Admin posts all the information, cause he was working on it for the last 3 hours).

Keep in mind most of these events will be running simultaneously with other events.  In order to satisfy the very large crowd we expect to be showing up to this event we had to overlap many of the events in order to fit them all in.  It will be possible for you to enter in to two or more tournaments running at the same time but keep in mind you have 5 minutes to report to your match station once your match is called before you forfeit the round.

Already announced, but here is the offical rules for Power Up 2010’s Gift Ball event.

Type: Tournament

Single  Elimination

4-Players, Xbox 360

Game rules-

  • Grifball is a simple game. Two teams of four players square off in an arena in which each team has a goal. The object is to take the ball from the middle of the court and put it in the other team’s goal.
  • Scoring a goal earns one point and ends the round. There is no time limit for each round.
  • Each match consists of at least nine rounds. The team with the most goals at the end of the game wins.
  • Each player is equipped with only a gravity hammer and an energy sword. There are no grenades. All weapons have unlimited ammo.
  • The base Halo 3 gametype is Assault (neutral bomb). Damage is set to 200% with player health set to 10%. One direct hit will kill a normal player.
  • Dead players respawn in three seconds at their own goal.
  • The ball carrier has a 2x Overshield, 150% speed, 150% damage resist, and turns orange for some reason. Any player may become the ball carrier by picking up the ball.
  • Friendly players can hurt each other.
  • Spawn camping is a legal and legitimate strategy.
  • No teammate swaps in game, out of the match a team captain may swap teammates due to players leaving the event or sickness.
